JI determination
Track 1 and track 2
The procedures for issuing emission reduction unit (ERU) based on a JI project activity to reduce GHG emission in a host Party (Annex I Party), are different depending on whether a host Party meets the eligibility requirements shown in the Marrakesh Accords (CP/2001/13/Ad2 para21, p12)
Track 1:
Where it is considered a host Party meets the eligibility requirements, the host Party may issue the appropriate quantity of ERUs.
Track 2:
Where it is considered a host Party does not meet the eligibility requirements, the verification of GHG emission reduction or removals by sinks from a JI project shall occur through the verification procedure as set out, which is similar to modalities and procedures for CDM.
Outline of JI project cycle is shown in fig.2 "JI project cycle" and the brief explanation of JI determination is given below.
Determination of a JI project
Determination of the JI project is to judge whether a project meets the relevant requirements of JI and these guidelines.
Track 1:
JI project will be determined in consultation with the host Party.
Track 2:
The determination is carried out by an independent entity (AIE), which corresponds a DOE for the CDM, based on the PDD.
Monitoring
Track 1:
JI project participants will collect and archive data, in accordance with the agreement with a host Party.
Track 2:
JI project participants will collect and archive data in accordance with the monitoring plan written in the PDD.
Determination of GHG emission reductions or removal by sinks
Determination of GHG emission reductions or removals by sinks is the periodic independent review and ex post determination of the monitored GHG emissions (or removal by sinks).
Track 1:
JI project participants and the host Party will determine GHG reductions or removal by sinks, in accordance with the agreement.
Track 2:
Determination of GHG emission reductions or removals by sinks is the periodic independent review and ex post determination of the monitored GHG emission reductions (removal by sinks).
